January Meeting Update & Calendar

Thank you, Sally, for hosting our annual planning meeting again this year.

          Las Madres 2013 Calendar

January: 12 intrepid regulars planned the whole year in record time, after enjoying a stuffed potato bar at Sally’s house.  Two decisions:  Merilee was voted onto the executive board, to replace Sally, who is LM president this year.  Also, a unanimous vote to have the driver excluded from the gas cost; in other words, their driving and car wear and tear are enough of a cost, and the passengers will cover the gas.

February: the meeting will be on the 21st and Tina will choose a movie.

March: Robin graciously offered to host the St. Patrick’s dinner again, though it will be after the actual “holiday.” Also, the Gomez’s 8-Ball party will be 3/23.

April:  on the 18th, Sharon will host: activity TBA.

May:  Sue Butler will come up with something, but you could always have an idea and take the meeting!

June:  Merilee will have us “hike” the Villages and them go to dinner.  Lots of winding green out there.  Bocce might be June 22 or 29th, but the court’s have to be reserved, and we might try another location.

July: Janis will host, activity TBA
Pinecrest, most people arriving around the 26th.

August: Randi, activity TBA

September:  Sally, bocce at Fowler Park.  Beach breakfast 9/21.
LADIES FALL TRIP to Colorado 9/27

October:  Shirley (see what happens when you are not at planning, they assign you a month!) activity TBA

November: Vicki, not only assigned a month in absentia, but also asked to do a floral craft to boot!

December: Marilyn graciously offered to host the Christmas dinner and exchange. THANK YOU!

Randi sweetly volunteered to work on the spring trip, she is scouting locations—Sausalito and Central Coast areas were suggested.  Info TBA.

NOTE:  Please send more suggestions for the spring Ladies' trip for the weekend of May 31st to Randi.

Merrilee's Menu
Thanks to Merrilee, we were treated to a wonderful brunch at her new home.  After exploring every nook and cranny in her beautiful home, we sat down to a marvelous meal.  Merrilee has graciouly shared her recipes with us.  They are available in the Brunches and Lunches section of our online recipe book.  Our online recipe book can be easily accessed from the link on our home page.

Observations from Oregon

We had a nice Christmas Eve celebration with Ron's entire family at his sister's house!  His brother's step-daughter and her family who live in the Washington D.C. area were there!  Adam and Maria were dead tired after running the coffee shop on their own; giving the baristas the day off.  They planned on closing at noon, but still had customers wanting to come in and lined up well after that!  Everyone out doing last minute shopping and wanting coffee!!!!

Ron's parents moved in with his sister early 2012.  They have their own section of the house for themselves, which was added on just for them.  However my mother-in-law tends to spend a lot of time in the main house baking in the kitchen!!  Ron's dad is showing more dementia and is slowing down quite a bit.  Ron's mom is doing well and still shows no signs of the lymphoma recurring from two years ago.

Brian's girlfriend since early college days at OSU, just received her PHD in chemistry.  They have had this long-distance relationship going for about the last 7 years while she was attending school in Pasadena.  She will continue to reside in the LA area for at least the next 6 months.  She took a temp post-doc position at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory while she figures out what she wants to do with her life.  Not sure where this relationship is going.  It doesn't appear to Ron and I that Brian is her top priority!  Time will tell.

I am still working at the same clinic.  So not much change with Ron & I.  In mid December we took our usual ski vacation to Whistler, Canada.  Nice early snow pack and pretty nice conditions.  Even sunny skies after fresh snow at times!!!  Light winds!  Ideal!

Miss everyone!  -Lynn and Ron

Saturday Coffee Clatches Continue.....Janis

We meet every Saturday morning at 9 am at Le Boulanger at San Felipe and Yerba Buena.  There is a Starbucks across from it if you need something "special" to go with your bagel or pastry.   February away coffee will be at the "On Fourth Cafe"  in the MLK Library at San Jose State on February 16th.  Then we will go see the "War Brides Past and Present" at the 4th floor exhibit hall in the Library.  Since the the Library opens at 9:00, maybe plan on being there around 9:15.   Park on the street or in the garage nearby.

Retired Heath Message

As I was lying in bed pondering the problems of the world, I rapidly realized that I don't really give a rat's hiney. It's the tortoise life for me!

1. If walking is good for your health, the postman would be immortal.

2. A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water, and is fat.

3. A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years.

4. A tortoise doesn't run and does nothing, yet it lives for 450 years.

And you tell me to exercise?  I don't think so.  I'm retired.  Go around me.
