Missouri Missive

It is hard to believe we have been in Missouri five months. We arrived to torrential rain and harsh storms in May. We enjoyed a lovely summer with heat and humidity only a minor issue We are awe struck with the midwest fall season. Warm days and cool nights make for a fabulous showing of fall colours.
We took a mini vacation in early October. We moved our fifth wheel from Branson West to Cape Fair. It is all of thirteen miles to the "quiet side of the lake". Eleven family members spent a week together- including Trevor. He flew into our Branson airport and giggled as he arrived in one of the two gates. The terminal looks like it is a big log building and there are rocking chairs in a fireplace setting for those of us waiting for arriving passengers. Cape Fair did not have an AT&T tower so Trevor and all of us were quickly "unplugged". I thought Trevor would have major withdrawal from his busy work life but he quickly settled into the slow paced life. We enjoyed a week of boating, great food, family stories and evening campfires. The fall colors were just beginning to show and it was heavenly waking up to the lake outside our window reflecting the colours in the water.

Our house is coming along. We had insulation, sheetrock, tape and texture completed. The ceiling were painting and the walls were primed. Our contractor had to make a surprise visit to Cape Fair to get our wall paint colours. He too couldn't reach us so he came to camp. Most of the tile work is complete and the finishing crew has done the mantle, dining room column and living room transom entry. One of the finishers looks like a young Keith Roessler and funny- his name turned out to be Keith. We met with a landscaper to figure out a plan for the yard and sidewalks.

It is Harvest Festival time in Branson. Lots of crafts and artisans, music and homestyle food. One barn brags about holding the largest barn dancing venue. It was fun to watch the "old folks" (did I say that?) dancing up a jig Then there was the lumberjacks competing at speed pole climbing, log rolling and boom running and then ax throwing. We were entertained by this guy playing the accordion and washboard not to mention his great voice.

Obviously, life in the midwest is a far cry from San Jose but we are feeling like retired folks and enjoying it. I have joined another book club but have to force myself to find time for reading. Walt says he has not taken up golf or fishing but manages to keep himself busy.

Oh and this state is going bonkers with baseball fever. Everything is cardinal red- the fountains, the zillion flags and even some restaurants serve red food.  Decorating is big business here also. Homes and businesses are decorated like we do at Christmas. Even the RV park has a competition going for the best dressed site. I won't be winning that....everything I own is packed and in Springfield. I must say it will be fun unpacking all my boxes one of these days soon.

Wishing each of you a Happy Fall,

Joan and Walt

Congratulations
Our congratulations to Sue and Bud Butler who will be celebrating 35 years of wedded bliss on the 6th.
